Currently awaiting morning for the Paris-Ancaster bike race. I get up at 5am to cook breakfast, disassemble my bike, and should be on my way by 6am.
Unconsolidated notes about Portugal.
In Portugal they drink to health - saúde - as they say. There were two drinks I liked. Ginjinha, which is a cherry liquor, made from sour cherries soaked in alcohol and sugar. It's not too sweet, and the cherries at the bottom of the bottle pack a punch. The other is Licor Beirão, which is a honey'ed herbal and medicinal liquor, to be mixed with some lime. I brought a bottle home but have yet to crack it open.
At lunch, vinho verde, or young green wine, is served. I didn't like it too much, but it's like beer - it comes very cheaply and goes well with meats and stews.
Of course, when in Port, drink port. It is a pretty big deal there for tourism - we couldn't walk two paces without running into a port tasting room, which is like a North American coffee shop, except it serves port and some snacks.
They have only one beer - SuperBock. I like it very much.
