The highlight of the weekend was meeting Cecily from Dames Making Games Toronto (https://dmg.to). She pronounces it "see-si-ly". I've been an ally (monthly monetary supporter - https://dmg.to/support#join) since December 2012, but I haven't been able to attend any of the DMG events until this weekend.
She asked me (paraphrased) "Why do you support DMG?" and I got really tongue tied. I'm not a very good on the spot verbalist, so while there could be a million things I could say, I fell back to "It's important to have diversity in the community." A kind of non-answer. It would be good enough for a regular person, but I really wanted to clarify and explain, to myself, even, why I support initiatives like DMG, Ladies Learning Code, and Girls Learning Code with my time (both paid as well as volunteer hours) and money.
The next day I went to FanExpo and Cecily was on a panel with other women and a man talking about women in gaming.
Aside from DMG and FanExpo, I attended BookCampTO 2013 - which was a bit of a let down for me personally. I wasn't in the right mindset to attend and engage fully (law of two feet in practice), and I walked out after reading a melodramatic ebook in the "Free Room" by myself.
I've been sad and lonely for a long time now, but I'm happier having met Cecily and finally attended a DMG event.
